That is why this match was being watched so closely. With the five-match series level at 0-0, every selection carried extra weight, and Sooryavanshi’s inclusion gave India a headline before a ball was even hit. He was not the only one under the lens. Tilak Varma worked the ball to a wide outside off stump for four to third, then hit Jofra Archer into the stands twice in succession, giving India the kind of burst that kept the innings moving.
Even so, the innings kept losing shape as it went on. That was the contradiction in the innings: moments of aggression, but not enough control. Daniel Norcross put it plainly as the surface wore on, saying India had really fallen away and suggesting the ball had grown older and softer, making timing harder. It was a fair reading of a side that could strike cleanly, yet still drift when the conditions changed.
What comes next is the question the score leaves hanging over Sooryavanshi, not the total. A 15-year-old debutant in an international T20 has already made the selection impossible to ignore, and with the series still only in its second match, India’s decision to back him here will be judged by whether the gamble is repeated, not just by how quickly his first outing ended.
