They had also hit 110 home runs before Thursday’s games, a reminder that the lineup had not vanished with the roster churn. For the Yankees, the opening game offered a clean chance to reset against a club they had long handled well.
Rodón’s status is where the weekend plan broke open. He had been listed for Saturday at 1:35 pm ET against Zebby Matthews, but the IL update changed that before the game arrived. Rodón had a 3.30 ERA and a 3.45 FIP, yet the problems underneath the results were hard to miss: a 4.6 BB/9 rate and only 61 percent of his pitches going for strikes. The question that followed the move was simple and practical, not theoretical: the Yankees needed a Saturday starter, and the available path pointed to Brendan Beck as a potential bulk arm in front of an opener.
Sunday’s game gave the rotation some shape again, with Ryan Weathers scheduled to start at 1:35 pm ET against Joe Ryan. Weathers carried a 4.08 ERA, a 104 ERA+ and a 4.13 FIP, though he had just lasted 1.2 innings in his previous start and allowed five runs to the Tigers. For the Yankees, the weekend now turns on whether the staff can cover Saturday without Rodón and whether Cole’s form holds long enough to keep the series from slipping away before it settles.
