He said the draw had initially pointed Argentina toward a South American showdown against Uruguay in Miami and that the group included two world champions, but added that football can change quickly and Cape Verde had done very, very well in the group stage. That is the friction in this match: Argentina prepared for one path, and Cape Verde forced another.
Cape Verde manager Bubista has leaned into that belief. He said his team knows the task is hard but believes it can play a great match and hurt Argentina. For Cape Verde, the prize is even bigger than the upset itself: its first-ever World Cup win. For Argentina, the issue is simpler and more dangerous. If Scaloni’s team gets drawn into a game of rushed attacks against a side built to defend and break, the opener in the knockout bracket can become the sort of trap that ends a run early.
