Target stores will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time on both July 3 and July 4, and Walmart stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time on both days. That makes Costco’s holiday closure stand out, since the broader retail calendar is not shutting down in the same way.
The question shoppers still have is whether any Which Costco locations will make an exception. That remains unresolved in the available schedule, and the guidance is to check local store hours because they may vary by location. The same caution applies to the rest of the weekend, when holiday schedules can change delivery services and store timing without much warning.
Other services are moving on a different track. U.S. post offices will be open on Friday, July 3, and mail deliveries will continue as normal, but USPS will close stores and suspend mail delivery on July 4. UPS retail locations will be open on July 3 and delivery services will continue as normal, then UPS will halt pickup and delivery services on July 4. FedEx delivery and pickup services will run on Friday, July 3, but FedEx pickup and delivery services will be closed on Saturday, July 4.
Banking and markets are following the holiday split too. Major banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo will remain open on Friday, July 3, while most banks close on July 4 for Independence Day. The stock market will be closed on Friday, July 3, with trading set to resume on Monday, July 6, at 9:30 a.m. ET. For shoppers, that leaves Costco closed on the day many people expect to rely on it most, even as much of the retail and service world keeps moving.
