Rafael Leão’s hoped-for move to the Premier League has stalled, and for now Milan still have him on the books. No English club has made a concrete move for the forward, and Arsenal have already backed away after a video call in late May.
That matters today because Leão is still at the World Cup, where he has not started a game and is expected to begin the Round of 16 meeting with Croatia on the bench again. He has at least made one impact when given the chance, scoring against Uzbekistan after coming off the bench, but his club situation has moved far more slowly than he wanted.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning that no club in London, Manchester or the surrounding areas has come knocking for him. The only genuine interest identified so far is from Galatasaray, a sign of how little the Premier League market has opened up around a player who expected more after his season with Milan.
Leão remains under contract until 2028, but Milan’s position has hardened into something less protective than before. The club would not be devastated if a suitable offer arrived, and he is no longer regarded as untouchable. In practical terms, that means the price has to be right, and so far no English side has been willing to test it.
That leaves Leão in a familiar but awkward place: wanted by name, not yet wanted with money. He has said he will decide his future once the World Cup is over, and perhaps after a chat with Rúben Amorim. Until then, the bench in Portugal and the silence from England are doing most of the talking.
