The Philadelphia 76ers moved into free agency with part of their 76ers roster already set and two major decisions still hanging. On Monday, the front office picked up team options on Dominick Barlow and Dalen Terry, then declined Trendon Watford’s option, but Kelly Oubre Jr. and Quentin Grimes remained unresolved as Tuesday’s free agency window approached.
That matters because the Sixers are not searching for cosmetic depth. They already have their big four of Joel Embiid, Paul George, VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey in place, and they still need at least one more guard, another wing and more help up front. The roster is also shallow enough that every move now changes how far the team can stretch its limited room.
For Mike Gansey and Jameer Nelson, in their first offseason running decisions for the Sixers, the timing is as important as the names. The team drafted Labaron Philon Jr. last week, and he is the third guard on the roster, but that does not solve the need for another steady ballhandler. The front office also has to keep one eye on center depth, with Adem Bona set to return after playing a lot of minutes last season and Johni Broome back after barely seeing the floor.
Oubre, Grimes and Andre Drummond were all vital pieces in Nick Nurse’s rotation last season, when the Sixers reached the Eastern Conference semifinals. That is what makes their free-agent status more than a housekeeping issue. The club can use the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which gives it around $15 million to spend, and the biannual exception, worth a projected $5.5 million, but those tools do not change the fact that every dollar has to be aimed at specific holes.
The fit is clear and the margin is thin. Justin Edwards and Paul George are the only true wings on the roster, which leaves almost no cushion if Oubre does not return or if Grimes lands elsewhere. The Sixers can still fill out the bench, but they cannot do it casually. Their next move will say whether they are trying to preserve last season’s core or replace key minutes one by one before the market moves on.
