The Detroit Red Wings acquired Keegan Kolesar from the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday, sending a seventh-round pick in 2027 and a third-round pick in 2029 the other way. Detroit added a forward who has spent his entire NHL career in Vegas, and the move immediately changed the club’s forward depth.
Kolesar gives the Red Wings a player whose recent usage has been hard to ignore. He played in 82 regular-season games in back-to-back years for Vegas, then skated in all 21 of the Golden Knights’ 22 post-season games during their run to the Stanley Cup Final, adding one goal along the way.
That is part of what makes the deal notable. In 2025-26, Kolesar had six games and 11 assists while averaging 11:32 of ice time per contest, and he has 44 goals and 76 assists in 439 career games. He was also a consistent member of the Golden Knights’ lineup during their Stanley Cup victory in 2022-23, which gave him a track record Detroit could lean on.
The trade also answers one practical question about the picks. A seventh-round pick in 2027 and a third-round pick in 2029 are future draft selections, not players, and nothing in the deal indicates the Red Wings are simply swapping away their own immediate depth. That is the kind of exchange teams make when they believe a veteran forward can help now more than two long-range lottery tickets can.
Still, the part that lingers is the simplest one: Vegas kept Kolesar in the lineup night after night, and he still moved on. He had been durable, trusted and present in every sense that matters over the course of the last two seasons, yet the Golden Knights were willing to part with him for future draft capital. For Detroit, the next question is not what Kolesar has done in Vegas. It is where the Red Wings intend to use him once he arrives.
