Lanlana Tararudee won the biggest match of her career at Wimbledon on Monday, beating Lilli Tagger 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 for her first Grand Slam main-draw victory. She had to survive a sharp late surge after leading 5-1 in the final set, but held on long enough to turn a breakthrough into history.
The win mattered because it did more than move Tararudee into the second round. She and Mananchaya Sawangkaew became the first Thai players in the Open Era to win Grand Slam main-draw matches at the same event, a rare shared milestone that gives this Wimbledon fortnight a place in Thailand's tennis record book.
Tararudee's rise has been building for months. In March, she won her first WTA 125 title in Austin against Bianca Andreescu, then cracked the Top 100 shortly before the French Open. That run has been shaped in part by Paradorn Srichaphan's academy, where she said she learned how to manage points and herself during tournaments, and she has also said she was lucky to have a very good team around her.
That support showed in the way she handled the match when it began to slip. After taking the opening set in a tiebreak, she dropped the second and then watched Tagger push hard from 5-1 down in the third. Tararudee did not panic, kept playing through the pressure and found enough answers to close out the match before the comeback was complete.
The result also fits into a longer Thai line at Wimbledon. Tamarine Tanasugarn reached the quarterfinals in 2008, and Tararudee said Tanasugarn texted her congratulations and told her to enjoy the grass. Now Tararudee gets a second-round match against No. 18 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, with the question shifting from whether she can break through to how far this version of her game can go.
