Quentin Grimes is not expected back with the Philadelphia 76ers, and that changes the shape of their guard picture as free agency opens. Tony Jones reported on June 30 that Grimes will not be back in a 76ers uniform, while another report linked him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
That matters now because Grimes had just finished a short, productive run in Philadelphia and the team still needs help at the position. He played 75 games for the Sixers and averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists, numbers that made him one of the more useful pieces on a roster that leaned on him heavily after he arrived.
Grimes also arrived through a trade chain that says plenty about how quickly his role has changed. He was sent from the New York Knicks to the Detroit Pistons in 2023-2024, then moved from the Detroit Pistons to the Dallas Mavericks, and then from the Dallas Mavericks to the 76ers in 2024-2025. By the time he reached Philadelphia, it was the third trade for him in under two years.
The Sixers did have interest in bringing him back, but their room to maneuver is not unlimited. Free agency is already moving, and Philadelphia has been described as working with a limited budget. That leaves the team weighing whether it can keep a player it values or whether it has to pivot quickly to fill a guard spot another way.
The latest leaguewide read is that the Lakers are expected to secure commitments on new contracts from Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili while still pursuing Walker Kessler. If that holds, Philadelphia loses one of the few backcourt options it had just added, and the first night of free agency becomes less about retaining a contributor than about replacing him.
Philadelphia did make its first free agency move before July by adding Dean Wade, but that does not answer the larger roster problem left by Grimes' likely departure. The next step is the one that matters most: whether the Sixers can find another guard before the market tightens further.
