England Men named their XI for the first Vitality IT20 against India on Wednesday, with Harry Brook set to captain the side in the series opener at Banks Homes Riverside in Chester-le-Street. The selection gives England a settled starting point for a run of five Vitality IT20s and three Metro Bank ODIs against India between 1 and 19 July. For Brook, it is a chance to lead an experienced group that the England and Wales Cricket Board said has more than 650 caps between them, in front of a first crowd in Durham that knows the schedule is moving quickly.
That speed matters because the opening match is only the start of a packed month. The second Vitality IT20 follows at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday 4 July, then Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday 7 July, Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol on Thursday 9 July and Utilita Bowl in Southampton on Saturday 11 July. England have fixed their plans early, while India arrive after a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland last week, which makes early rhythm harder to read on both sides.
What England have not explained is why this exact XI was chosen for the first game. The balance is clear enough on paper: Salt and Buttler at the top, Brook in charge, all-round options through Curran, Jacks and Dawson, and a bowling attack built around Mahmood, Rashid and Wood. Whether that mix is enough to set the tone for the India contest will begin to answer itself at 5.30pm on Wednesday in Chester-le-Street.
