The Sixers are being linked to Dean Wade as NBA free agency is set to open at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday, giving Philadelphia a possible forward target just as the market begins to move. Wade, who has spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is drawing interest from more than one team.
For Philadelphia, the timing matters because the roster still has openings after the 2026 NBA Draft, when the club added Alabama's Labaron Philon and picked up team options for Dominick Barlow and Dalen Terry. The team remains thin at the forward spots, and Wade fits that need as a capable outside shooter and a strong switch defender who can credibly guard one through five in certain matchups.
Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported that Wade has a lot of interest around the league and that new Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey is a particular fan. Gansey also helped bring Wade to Cleveland as an undrafted free agent, a reminder of how far Wade has come since beginning his career on a two-way contract before earning a recent three-year, $18.5 million deal.
That is where the fit gets interesting. Wade has a career 36.7 percent mark from three-point range, but he has never averaged as many as four attempts per game and has taken 73.8 percent of his shots from downtown, with under one free throw attempt per game for his career. He is the kind of low-usage, defense-first forward that can support a rotation without needing the ball, which is part of why he could be helpful if Philadelphia could get him for a portion of the non-taxpayer’s mid-level exception.
But the move is not cleanly headed one way. Sources said there is still a chance Wade stays with the Cavaliers, and that keeps him from being a simple Philadelphia target heading into Tuesday evening. The Sixers may want the shooting, the defense and the size, but Wade’s market is broad enough that the first decision he makes could be whether he leaves Cleveland at all.
