Arsenal’s under-£60million offer for Bruno Guimaraes has been rejected by Newcastle United, leaving the Brazil midfielder where he is for now and sharpening the question of whether the club will go back in with a higher bid. Newcastle have made clear he is not for sale, but Arsenal’s move shows they were willing to test that line.
The timing matters because Guimaraes is not just a transfer target on paper. He has two years left on his contract, and he is in the middle of a strong World Cup campaign for Brazil, where he has delivered three assists in three group matches. For a player Arsenal once tracked before he joined Lyon in January 2020, and then again after he moved to Newcastle United in January 2022, that combination keeps his name moving fast through the market.
Tiago Nunes is one of the few people who can speak to how long that interest has been around. He recalled a phone conversation in which Edu Gasper asked about Guimaraes’ qualities, and said he urged him to sign the midfielder because he had huge potential. Nunes said Arsenal wanted players who could keep possession and interpret space, which is exactly the sort of profile that has kept Guimaraes on their radar even as they have also shown interest in Alex Scott of Bournemouth and previously Sandro Tonali.
That pursuit has not been without friction. Some observers think Arsenal already have enough midfield options, yet Mikel Arteta’s side still went after Guimaraes and had their offer turned down. Newcastle’s refusal fits the way they have treated him since he arrived, even if his contract now has only two years left to run and the price of waiting is that a player in form can become harder to hold.
Guimaraes has also repeatedly given Arsenal problems on the pitch. He scored in his first appearance against them, and in 2023 he avoided punishment after striking Jorginho with his arm. So the next move is plain enough: either Arsenal decide this is worth another offer, or Newcastle keep the same answer and force the market to move on without them.
