Draymond Green’s decision to decline his 2026-2027 player option gave the Warriors a new way to talk about a LeBron James pursuit. By stepping away from a $27.6 million contract for next season, Green opened the salary-cap route that makes Golden State eligible to use the $15 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception.
That is why the Warriors roster is being searched now. On Monday morning, the possibility of a LeBron move began to flicker again, because Golden State finally had something better than the veterans’ minimum to work with. The difference is real, but so is the ceiling: the Lakers can still offer LeBron James far more money than Golden State can.
For a team that has long looked for a plausible path to add LeBron, the Green decision changes the math, not the market. League sources have long speculated that the Warriors would be James’s first choice if he and the Lakers soured on each other and certain conditions could be met. But the conditions were always doing the heavy lifting. LeBron has made clear before that absolutely nothing is set in stone, and the money still points in one direction.
The roster ripple does not stop with LeBron. Multiple NBA sources said the link between James and Anthony Davis has mostly been assumed, not explicitly demanded by LeBron or Rich Paul. The Davis-and-Jimmy Butler idea is also described more as a hypothetical than as serious trade negotiations between the Wizards and the Warriors. That matters because any Davis acquisition would almost certainly push Golden State out of talks to keep free agent Kristaps Porzingis, who had been very much in the Warriors’ hopes and plans for next season until a day or two ago.
So the opening created by Green is genuine, but it is narrow. The Warriors can now offer more than the veterans’ minimum, and that is enough to put their name into the conversation. It is not enough to erase the gap with the Lakers or to make the rest of the Warriors roster puzzle disappear. If Golden State keeps chasing James, it may have to decide whether the bigger swing is worth giving up Porzingis and the cleaner roster path that came with him.
