The Rangers are calling up Cameron Cauley to make his major league debut, putting the 23-year-old in position to join the roster after a season that turned him into one of the organization’s more intriguing infield options. He is not on the 40-man roster yet, so Texas will need to clear space before the move becomes official.
That callup lands now because Texas already has an opening on the 40-man roster and may need another one if the club completes its reported major league deal with Chris Paddack. Cameron Cauley, the Rangers’ third-round pick in 2021, has spent this season at Triple-A and gone 29-for-29 in stolen base attempts in 74 games while batting.262/.363/.407 with eight home runs, 12 doubles and three triples in 343 plate appearances.
His speed has carried the loudest numbers, but it is not the only reason he is moving. Cauley also drew walks at a 13.1% clip and cut his strikeout rate to 21.3% at Triple-A, a better line than the nearly 32% strikeout rate he posted in 2023, the 29.2% rate he carried at High-A the year before last and the 24.7% mark he logged in Double-A last season. Even so, the bat is still the question. He is being promoted with real doubt hanging over how he will handle more advanced pitching.
Texas can absorb one roster addition only because another move is still coming. The club could transfer Jack Leiter from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list, which would open a spot, but that has not been confirmed. Leiter had ankle surgery last week, Wyatt Langford went on the injured list over the weekend, and Cody Freeman and Michael Helman have also gone down this month, leaving the Rangers thin across the roster.
Cauley has given Texas a reason to take the leap. He has played more shortstop than any other position this season, with 227 innings there, 187 in center, 109 at second base and 87 at third base, and scouting reports have long viewed him as a plus defender all over the diamond. He also topped 25 steals and reached exactly 15 home runs in both 2024 and 2025, and his contact rate has climbed from 71.8% last season to 75.7% this year.
For the Rangers, the move is less about one prospect than about a roster under strain. Core spots are already spoken for by Corey Seager and Josh Jung, Nicky Lopez has been getting run at second base, Ezequiel Duran can also fit there while moving around the field, and Evan Carter just returned in center when Wyatt Langford hit the injured list. Cauley now gets the first crack at a bigger stage, and the next piece of the puzzle is not his debut so much as the 40-man move that has to come with it.
