Países Bajos arrived in México with an old wound back in view and a new test just ahead of it: a Monday match against Marruecos in Monterrey. Virgil Van Dijk said he expected to see a lot of orange in the stadium and described the welcome in México as a great one.
The timing matters because this is not just another group of supporters turning up for a routine trip. FIFA said more than 20,000 Dutch supporters would travel from Kansas City, where Ronald Koeman’s team has been based for training, giving Países Bajos a sizeable travelling presence before kickoff.
The reason this matchup keeps drawing attention is the memory of 29 June 2014 in Fortaleza, Brasil, when México met Holanda in the World Cup round of 16. Giovani dos Santos put México ahead with a left-footed shot from outside the area, Wesley Sneijder levelled in the 88th minute and, in stoppage time, Arjen Robben went down in the area before Pedro Proenca awarded a penalty that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted. The phrase “No era penal” spread immediately on social media and has never really left this fixture behind.
Van Dijk sounded aware of that history, but not alarmed by it. He said he knew the story and hoped for a good welcome and a great atmosphere, even if he might be wrong. That is where the picture gets complicated: he spoke of a warm reception from México while criticism and rejection had intensified online in recent days, a split between what the players say they felt and what the internet has been feeding back to them.
That gap is why Monday in Monterrey is being watched so closely. Países Bajos is expected to have its own support inside the stadium, and the open question is whether Mexican fans will answer the old grievance with boos, indifference or the kind of mixed crowd that Van Dijk says he expects. For now, the Dutch arrive with numbers, memories and orange shirts, and they will find out soon enough whether México has moved on from the penalty that still shadows this matchup.
