Kevin Huerter agreed to stay with the Detroit Pistons on a three-year deal worth $27 million, giving the club a rotation wing to carry into the next stretch of roster building. The agreement was reported Monday, just ahead of NBA free agency.
For Huerter, 27, the deal locks in a return to Detroit after a short but useful run there last season. He played 25 games for the Pistons after the Feb. 3 trade and averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 44.3 percent from the field.
The move matters because Detroit is buying continuity after reaching the second round last season and because Huerter’s name still carries a clear skill label: shooting. He owns a career three-point percentage of 36.8 percent, but that number dipped sharply in Detroit, where he hit just 29.4 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. That split helps explain why the Pistons were willing to keep him on a deal that, at $9 million per year, is sizable without being a full-scale commitment.
Huerter’s path to this agreement has moved quickly across the league. The Atlanta Hawks selected him with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings got him in July 2022, and he later landed with the Chicago Bulls before the Feb. 3 swap brought him to Detroit as part of a three-team trade that also involved the Minnesota Timberwolves. His career line, 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 27.4 minutes per game, shows why teams keep betting on the broader package even when the shot is not falling.
What remains unknown is the exact structure of the new deal beyond the reported total. The reported terms do not say whether the contract includes options or how the money is distributed year by year, but the direction is clear: Detroit has chosen Huerter as part of its next phase, and he will have at least three more seasons to prove the fit was the right one.
