That is why Holiday keeps coming back into the conversation now. He was not a marginal piece in Milwaukee; he was the starter, an All-Defensive selection every season he played there, and an All-Star in 2023 after putting up 18.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game. In 2021, he was part of the championship run that gave the Bucks proof of concept on both ends.
He also gave them balance that is hard to replace. The Bucks chose Lillard because they wanted more scoring gravity in the biggest games, and the thinking was that pairing him with Giannis Antetokounmpo would lift an offense that could stall when defenses loaded up. Holiday could play shooting guard just as well as point guard, and the argument for keeping him was simple: the Bucks would have had enough shooting between Holiday and Lillard to make any offense work while preserving the defense that had defined them.
