The disagreement did not end there. Senior City sources said they had no ill feeling towards Chelsea and described the contractual dispute as one between Chelsea and Maresca, while Chelsea said a confidential settlement had been reached with Manchester City that included compensation and that a separate confidential settlement had also been reached with the former head coach under which he would pay compensation. The size of that payment has not been disclosed, but the fact that it was part of the deal shows how much the move had to be unwound before City could move on.
For City, the appointment gives the club a clear successor and a familiar one. For Maresca, it is a return to a place he knows well, with expectations that he will preserve the Guardiola blueprint while making the job his own. The bigger question now is not who takes over, but how quickly he can turn that continuity into results.
