Pete Prisco put Justin Jefferson at No. 8 on his annual top-100 NFL players list on Thursday, a ranking that keeps the Minnesota Vikings receiver in the league’s upper tier even after what was described as the worst season of his career.
The placement matters because Jefferson still answered on the field late in the year. In Week 18, he posted his third 100-yard game of the 2025 season and extended his streak of 1,000-yard seasons to six, a reminder that even a down year for him still looks like a strong season for almost anyone else.
Prisco’s case was straightforward: Jefferson was hurt by poor quarterback play last year, but he still called him the most talented receiver in the game. He also pointed to the numbers that framed the slump, noting Jefferson had 84 catches and only two touchdowns last season before adding that Kyler Murray should help his production this year. That is the logic behind the No. 8 spot: the production dipped, but the talent never did.
That did not settle the debate. Leger Douzable said on CBS Sports Network that the ranking was too high, arguing that quarterback problems were part of the picture for Jefferson, too, and pointing to J.J. McCarthy’s struggles under center. Douzable also widened the lens, saying that over the last two seasons the receivers who sit No. 1 and No. 2 in receiving yards, Ja'Marr Chase and Jaxson Smith-Njigba, have dealt with different quarterbacks and still produced at a level that remained through the roof.
It is also notable that Jefferson was the only Viking on Prisco’s list, which says as much about the team around him as it does about Jefferson himself. His ranking reflects a simple bet: if the quarterback play improves, the numbers should rise with it. The unanswered question is how much of a jump Murray can really provide, because Jefferson’s floor is already high and the gap between No. 8 and the players above him is where these lists start to matter.
If Jefferson gets a cleaner season behind him, the argument over No. 8 will fade fast. If the quarterback play stalls again, this ranking may end up looking less like praise than a warning about how much more he can still carry on his own.
