Viktor Hovland took the solo lead on the 18th hole Saturday, turning a back-and-forth duel with Scottie Scheffler into the defining moment of Round 3 at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
The lead changed hands all afternoon before Hovland finished the day in front, the kind of late move that makes a Saturday feel like much more than a moving day. In a PGA Tour event that was already drawing attention, that final hole gave the third round a clean edge: Hovland is the man to catch heading into Sunday.
That is why the crowd mattered too. Even after rain earlier in the afternoon, the fan zone beside the 17th and 18th holes stayed busy, with fans moving through food stalls, yard games, photo spots and shaded seating as the round reached its finish. Kenny said people come out to hang out, watch golf and treat the day almost like a walk as much as a sporting event, while James Furey pointed to the stands, the simulators, the putting areas and the prizes as part of what keeps the experience lively.
The setting explains the pull. The fan zone is built into the closing stretch, so the pressure on the course and the crowd around it feed off each other. Company tents are offering games and free merchandise, and fans can try a chipping challenge, a virtual golf simulator or a putting green while the players close in on the finish.
The morning added another layer to the day. First Tee Connecticut held its annual breakfast, honoring donors, celebrating student achievement and awarding scholarships to young participants in a program that uses golf to teach confidence and resilience to more than 70,000 kids across Connecticut.
Sunday brings the finish. Tee times begin at 8:45 a.m., with gates opening at 8:30 a.m., and the last round will decide whether Hovland keeps the lead he seized on 18 or Scheffler pulls it back before the Travelers Championship is decided.
