Toronto Stadium is heading toward its only World Cup knockout match, and Portugal Vs Croatia could end up deciding who plays there on July 2. The venue has already hosted five group-stage matches, but the final Round of 32 slot will go to the runner-up from Group K and the runner-up from Group L.
That is why the search around Portugal Vs Croatia has intensified now: the final standings are not settled, and the bracket still has room to move. Portugal can still finish on top of Group K and go to Vancouver, or slip into Toronto if it draws or loses to Colombia. Ghana, meanwhile, was on track to meet Croatia in Toronto after entering its final group-stage match with four points and a clean sheet through the tournament.
The clearest path to Toronto for Ghana is simple. If it beats or draws Croatia, it finishes second in Group L and returns to Toronto for the Round of 32. If it loses, it still goes through as one of the tournament's best third-place teams. Croatia has its own route into the same match: a win or a draw sends it through, and if it wins, its best possible finish is runner-up, which would send it back to Toronto on July 2.
England sits over all of this as the main complication in Group L. It had an 84 per cent chance of winning the group and going to Atlanta for its July 1 knockout game, but it still had roughly a 15 per cent chance of finishing second. That could happen if England draws and Ghana beats Croatia by enough to pass England on goal differential, a narrow opening that keeps the Toronto bracket alive even with England still heavily favored.
Group K has its own math. If Portugal beats Colombia, it wins the group and heads to Vancouver. If it draws or loses, it finishes second and goes to Toronto. Portugal could fall to third only if DR Congo beats Uzbekistan by at least five goals, and even then the DR Congo path depends on a specific chain of results, including Colombia beating Portugal 1-0 and other results breaking its way. DR Congo has scored once, Uzbekistan has conceded eight goals in its previous two matches, and that leaves a thin but real opening for another team to crash into the Toronto slot.
The final group-stage matches will settle all of it. Toronto Stadium already had its five group-stage matches, but only one knockout game remains there, and the identity of both teams is still being decided by results in Groups K and L. By the time the last whistle sounds, Toronto will either have Portugal, Croatia or Ghana in the bracket, or all three will be left looking at the same July 2 date from somewhere else.
