Seth Rollins beat Bron Breakker in a steel cage grudge match at WWE Night of Champions on Saturday, and the finish gave their rivalry a sharp new edge. Rollins took two Spears, stayed in the fight and ended it with a middle-rope Stomp on a bloodied Breakker.
The result mattered because this was not a stand-alone win. Rollins and Breakker had already traded victories, with Breakker beating Rollins at the May 9 Backlash premium live event before Rollins answered on the June 1 episode of Raw. Saturday's cage was meant to keep the mess out, but this feud had already spread beyond the ring.
Last year, Breakker took out Rollins with a spear and effectively pushed him out of The Vision, a blow that cost Rollins months of action. Rollins later returned to the fray, while Breakker also landed on the shelf at one point, and the rivalry kept rolling toward another collision. Bron Breakker then came back at WrestleMania 42 and cost Rollins his match against Gunther, keeping the conflict alive even after the sides seemed to have settled scores.
That is what made the cage match so useful and so revealing. The Street Profits had already been involved in the conflict, with Angelo Dawkins open to helping Rollins and Montez Ford first reluctant before coming around and playing a sizable role in Rollins' June 1 win. A steel cage was supposed to limit outside involvement, yet the feud had already shown that clean boundaries were hard to keep in place.
Rollins now has a second straight victory over Breakker, and that is the strongest sign yet that the rivalry may be moving toward its end. WWE did not announce a next match, and the cage win leaves Breakker with the harder task: finding a way back after being beaten in the one setting designed to close the door.
