Tahir Abdullayev is set to make his UFC debut on Saturday, when he meets Jefferson Nascimento in the opening bout of UFC Baku at the National Gymnastics Arena. The welterweight pairing gives both promotional debutants an early place on a card that starts with a matchup built around two fighters entering with very different betting lines.
Before Saturday, Nascimento was installed as the -115 favorite, while Abdullayev opened as the -105 underdog. That is the first number most readers will notice, because Abdullayev arrives with the kind of recent run that usually draws attention: he has won four of his last five bouts, and his only loss in that stretch came against Khotam Boynazarov.
For Abdullayev, the path into UFC Baku runs through a five-fight stretch that also included Oleg Kosinov, Shokhruz Rakhmatov, Alimjon Shadmanov and Siavash Dadras. He brings a reputation built on elite wrestling and former UAE Warriors title success, but the form line matters too. A fighter who has taken four of five, and has done it against that mix of opponents, arrives with more than just a prospect label attached.
Nascimento brings a different set of markers. He comes in as a former LFA champion and an undefeated pro MMA fighter, with wins over Matheus Rocha, Italo Gomes, Gabriel Costa, Baysangur Makaev and Gian Maurente. That record helps explain why the betting market has him narrowly ahead, even with Abdullayev described as the stronger grappler and a fighter whose striking does not always get the same credit as his wrestling.
That is where the matchup stops looking tidy. Abdullayev has been described as a superior grappler with underrated striking, and one preview of the bout went further, saying Nascimento may be expecting a wrestling-heavy approach and could overlook the striking threat. It also suggested Abdullayev can end a fight with one punch. Those are bold claims for a debutant, but they matter because the odds do not fully match the style read.
UFC Baku has placed the fight where it will be seen first, and that is usually where a debut can make its strongest first impression. The unanswered part is not who gets the bigger stage. It is whether Abdullayev’s run of recent wins and grappling edge can matter enough against an unbeaten opponent the market has still chosen to favor.
