Michal Postava has made his target plain: the Detroit Red Wings backup job behind John Gibson is the one he wants next fall, and he wants to make it his to lose. The 24-year-old said leaving for America was driven by that goal, and a strong first season with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins has put him in position to chase it.
That is why Postava is drawing attention now. Detroit will have an opening next fall for a backup to Gibson, and Postava’s rookie season in North America gave him a case built on results, not hope. He played 33 games for the Griffins and finished with a 1.71 goals-against average, a.937 save percentage and four shutouts, numbers that mark him as one of the better performers in the AHL last season.
Postava said the leap was not simple. His first season abroad meant adjusting to a new environment, the smaller ice and English communication with teammates, but he said he and Roope Koistinen worked through the details needed to get comfortable with overseas hockey as quickly as possible. Koistinen, he said, understood what a goalie from Europe needs to discuss, solve and train to make the transition work.
The performance also changed his place in the organization. Postava moved ahead of Sebastian Cossa on the depth chart and got the nod as the Griffins’ playoff goalie, a notable step for a North American rookie who arrived after backstopping Kometa Brno to the Czech Extraliga title the season before. In 33 games, he allowed four goals once and three goals in seven other games, the kind of consistency that pushed him into the next conversation.
That conversation still has a final gate. The NHL job is not his yet, and the path to it only opens next fall, when the backup spot behind Gibson becomes available. Postava has already shown he can handle the move from Europe to North America and turn it into results; the real test is whether the Red Wings decide he has done enough to keep climbing when that opening arrives.
