The Angels fired Perry Minasian on June 26 and turned to John Mozeliak as their interim general manager, a move that puts baseball operations in new hands while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Mozeliak, whose official title is baseball operations consultant, will handle daily roster maintenance in the short term.
The change answers the question of who will steer the front office right now: Mozeliak. The Angels said he was brought in to refine a baseball operations strategy and help guide the search for a new general manager, but they did not say how long that search is expected to last. That leaves the club in a temporary setup at a time when every roster decision carries added weight.
Minasian’s exit ends a five-plus year run that began when the Angels hired him over the 2020-21 offseason. When he took over, the club had reached the playoffs once in the previous 11 seasons and was already halfway through its window of club control over Shohei Ohtani. From there, the Angels kept trying to compete without fully rebuilding, and that approach never produced enough support around Ohtani and Trout.
The results under Minasian were mixed even when the club kept investing in the present. The Angels used top 15 overall picks on Zach Neto, Sam Bachman, Nolan Schanuel and Christian Moore between 2021 and 2024, then added Ky Bush with a second-round pick in 2021 and passed on their next two second-round choices to sign Noah Syndergaard and Tyler Anderson. After that, they traded Bush and Edgar Quero to the White Sox for Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López, a push that was followed by an 8-19 August and a waiver move that dumped salaries and avoided the luxury tax.
That is the friction in the Angels’ latest reset: the organization kept acting like a contender while its longer-term base remained shaky. The club thanked Minasian in a statement that called him a valued leader who had worked tirelessly over the last six years to strengthen the baseball operations department, but the immediate task now is finding a full-time GM who can set a direction the interim arrangement only delays. Mozeliak is in place for the short term; the unanswered question is whether the Angels will treat his presence as a bridge to a deeper change or simply a pause before the next familiar attempt to fix the same problem.
