The Guardians selected the contract of Cooper Ingle on June 26, 2026, and cleared the way by designating Stuart Fairchild for assignment. Cleveland made the move at 2:45pm CDT, giving the 24-year-old catcher/outfielder his first shot on the major league roster.
The timing explains why Ingle is suddenly a search topic for Guardians fans. Cleveland needed more offense from an outfield that has not produced enough this season, and it chose a player whose minor league line has been built on contact, patience and power. Ingle, a fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft, reached 1,208 professional plate appearances with a.282/.408/.461 line and a 149 wRC+, while 17.3% of those trips ended in a walk and only 16.5% ended in a strikeout.
That production is the reason he kept moving up lists. Baseball America ranked him 91st overall, and MLB Pipeline had him at No. 68. He also did not come to this point as a one-position player. After the Guardians acquired Patrick Bailey last month, they began using Ingle in left field in the minors, and he logged 65 innings there over seven starts before this promotion.
That is where the move gets more complicated. Cleveland has long put a premium on catcher defense, and Ingle’s bat has always looked stronger than the questions around his glove. The Guardians have not called him up to solve a simple catching shortage; they have added him because the offense has not been good enough to ignore, even if his fit behind the plate is still a live issue. Earlier in June, the club put Angel Martínez and Chase DeLauter on the injured list, then cycled through Stuart Fairchild, Steven Kwan, Petey Halpin, Daniel Schneemann, David Fry and Kahlil Watson in the outfield. None of that group carried a wRC+ above 96 in 2026, and the Cleveland outfield as a whole entered Thursday with a.229/.304/.358 line and an 87 wRC+.
The roster spot came from Fairchild, but the larger decision was about whether Ingle’s bat can force its way onto the field fast enough to matter. The Guardians have had Rhys Hoskins and Kyle Manzardo getting plenty of run at designated hitter while also sharing first base, and Hoskins was hitting.175/.313/.349 in 2026. That leaves room for a player who has hit at every stop, even if the best way to use him is not settled. If Ingle stays in left field, Cleveland is betting on offense first. If he ends up behind the plate, that would tell the bigger story: the Guardians trust the bat enough to test how much they can ask of the glove.
