The United States is through to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the second set of group matches, joining six other teams that had already done enough to move on. That means USA FC no longer has to spend the final round worrying about survival.
The seven teams through after round two were Argentina, Colombia, France, Germany, Mexico, Norway and the United States. Five teams were already out: Haiti, Jordan, Panama, Tunisia and Turkey. With one set of group matches still to play, the race has shifted from who can stay alive to who can improve position, and that is why the bracket matters now.
It also explains why the search interest is pointing here today. Lionel Messi, 39 years old, led the Golden Boot race with five goals, while Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland were both on four. Those numbers help frame how open the tournament has been, even as the knockout picture started to take shape.
Oliver Kay said he had been pleasantly surprised by how open so many of the games had remained, and added that there had been a real lack of jeopardy even if the group stage had been a lot of fun. That idea runs through the round-two picture: some teams had already secured their place, while others were still hanging on to very specific mathematical routes.
Senegal was one of the clearest examples of that split. Carl Anka pointed to Senegal’s defensive capitulation against Norway, a result that left them needing a large final-round outcome to keep any hope alive. Elsewhere, Jacob Whitehead said South Korea had been bad against Mexico after an excellent display against the Czech Republic, underlining how uneven the tournament had been from one match to the next.
There were other sharp snapshots from the same round. Lukas Weese noted that Curacao earned its first ever point at a World Cup in a 0-0 draw with Ecuador. Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero said Sweden were thrashed 5-1 by the Netherlands. Felipe Cardenas described Uruguay’s start as chaotic. Phil Hay highlighted the quality of fringe goalkeepers, another sign that the tournament was not following a neat script.
For the United States, the important part is already settled: the path to the knockouts is secure. What remains in the third and final set of group matches is not qualification but position, and the bracket will decide whether that comfort turns into a more favorable next step.
