Brad Stevens would not say Jaylen Brown will definitely be on the Boston Celtics roster when opening night arrives, and that was the only answer that mattered after the first round of the NBA Draft. Asked directly whether Brown would still be there, Stevens said he was never going to predict the future.
The uncertainty lands now because Brown, 29, has already told fans on a May 6 Twitch stream that he loves Boston and could play there for the next 10 years if it were up to him. That wish collides with the reality that the Celtics offered him in their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, a failed swing that showed how quickly a cornerstone can become a trade chip when the right deal appears.
Stevens did not sound dismissive of Brown. He called him an amazing teammate, a great person to be around and a big part of us, then added that every indication over the past few years has been building around those guys. He also said the one thing he wanted to make very clear was how valued Brown has always been, while noting that the run could end 10 years from now when he retires or before.
That leaves Brown in an uncomfortable place for a player who has won a championship in 2024, taken home Finals MVP, made five All-Star Game appearances and earned two All-NBA team berths. He has reached the conference finals six times and the finals twice, which is exactly why his name carries so much weight in any roster conversation. The problem for Boston is that its 56 regular-season wins looked stronger on paper than they did in practice, because the Celtics were eliminated in the first round and fell short of the championship standard those numbers suggested.
That gap is what keeps the story alive. Brown says he wants to stay. Stevens says he values him. The front office has already shown it will test the market on him, and the next real checkpoint is opening night, when Boston will have to show whether this is still a team built around Brown or a team still willing to listen if the right offer comes back.
