That trip comes with a catch: Thursday’s match against Ecuador will not change Germany’s next game. Germany, the Group E winner, has to wait for the third-place standings in Groups A, B, C, D and F before its Round of 32 opponent is known.
The route into the knockout stage was emphatic. Germany opened with a 7-1 win over Curacao and followed with a 2-1 defeat of Ivory Coast, results that were enough to clinch advancement before the final group game. For a team that has been under pressure after disappointing showings in the past two World Cups, the early payoff matters more than the margin.
One loss inside the group also still hangs over the squad. Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the rest of the tournament after suffering an ankle injury against Ivory Coast, leaving Germany to move on without him even as it tries to sort out who it will face next.
That unresolved opponent is the one missing piece. Germany already knows the date and city, but not the team, because the bracket depends on which third-place sides finish high enough across Groups A, B, C, D and F. The schedule is current through matches of June 24, so the picture should sharpen once those places are settled.
Germany’s task now is simple and unsettled at the same time. It has the berth, the date and the destination. What it does not yet have is the name of the team waiting in Boston.
