Caitlin Clark was assessed a technical foul in the Indiana Fever's win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday night, and it was her fifth of the season. That leaves her within three technical fouls of a league-mandated suspension, turning one late-game flashpoint into a much bigger issue.
The call came after Clark and DeWanna Bonner tangled up in the fourth quarter away from the ball at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark later said she was told the technical was for clapping and instigating, and she called the decision “Ridiculous.” She said, “I went to (referee) Gerda (Gatling), and I said, ‘Why’d you give me a technical foul?’ She said because I was ‘clapping and instigating,’” before adding, “OK, then you just don’t like competitive basketball. And that’s just facts. That’s just reality.”
The Fever held off Phoenix in a game that grew chippier as it went on, with five players receiving technicals in the aftermath of the fourth-quarter exchange. Clark's reaction fits a season-long pattern around her body language and physical edge, a theme that has followed her from earlier this season when she and the Atlanta Dream's Naz Hillmon were involved in a transition sequence that drew attention for the contact between them. In that sense, this was not just another whistle. It was the kind that changes the math around a player who is already one more stretch of frustration away from sitting out.
What makes the moment sting for Clark is that the technical came from a sequence in which she was not the only player involved and, by the description of the play, may not have been the most deserving of the players who were dinged.
