That seeding matters because the draw has given first-round byes to the higher-ranked players, including Iga Swiatek and Meera Andreeva, while Eala must start from the opening round of matches. Naomi Osaka is in the field as the 25th seed, and Leylah Fernandez is also entered, with Fernandez drawing wild card Katie Boulter first.
Eala arrives in Germany with evidence that she belongs in this company. She beat Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 in the Berlin Open quarterfinals, after a win over Elena Rybakina, and her run only ended when Linda Noskova beat her in 69 minutes in the semifinals on Sunday morning in Manila. Noskova now leads their series 2-0, a reminder that progress at this level can still be cut short quickly.
There is also a more immediate test inside the Bad Homburg Open draw. Eala has already beaten Swiatek at the Miami Open last year, but Mertens is the next obstacle and not a bridge to anything beyond Monday unless she clears it. A win would put Eala on the path to Osaka in the third round; a loss would leave her Berlin run as the stronger story than her Bad Homburg Open start.
For Eala, the next step is plain: beat Mertens, and the bracket opens. Fail, and the momentum from Berlin stops before it can become something bigger.
