Tommy Fleetwood backed for maiden major as U.S. Open support grows

Support for Tommy Fleetwood has surged ahead of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, and BOYLE Sports has cut his odds to 14/1 from 20/1. The move puts him among the most talked-about players before the tournament begins, even with Scottie Scheffler still the 5/1 favourite and Rory McIlroy priced at 9/1.

The shift is being driven by Fleetwood’s record at Shinnecock. He finished runner-up there in 2018, and that run is now feeding the belief that this could be the week he finally lifts a maiden major title. In betting terms, the cut from 20/1 to 14/1 is a 30% reduction in the price, a clear sign that backers are coming in earlier and harder than before.

Lawrence Lyons said Fleetwood is proving very popular because of what he has already done at Shinnecock, with Matt Fitzpatrick also drawing strong support after being trimmed to 14/1 from 25/1. Fitzpatrick, who finished runner-up at the Canadian Open the week before the U.S. Open, has also been pushed forward by recent form, making the English pair two of the busiest names in the market even as the favourites stay in front.

That is the friction in the picture. Fleetwood is attracting serious money, but the market leaders remain Scheffler and McIlroy, and the gap between popularity and outright favouritism still has to be bridged on the course. Fleetwood has the venue history and the backing, but he still has not won a major, which is why the coming U.S. Open is more than a price move: it is the test of whether faith in him finally matches a title.
