Ryne Nelson was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier Friday with a strained right elbow, and the Arizona Diamondbacks now have to manage a rotation spot without one of their recent starters. Nelson said he will be shut down from throwing for about four weeks before doctors take another look.
The move lands the same day fans would have been looking for his status, because the injury came out of his most recent start against the Los Angeles Angels at Chase Field. Nelson felt something in the third inning, but he kept going and finished seven innings of two-run baseball to get the win. It was a strong outing that turned into an awkward ending once the elbow would not let him keep pitching as if nothing had happened.
Nelson did not sound defeated, but he did not sound certain either. He said the injury is not the worst case and that it is not a full-blown UCL tear, which matters because a true tear usually leads to Tommy John and a much longer road back. His issue has been described as a flexor strain and minor UCL sprain, and that is better than the bleakest outcome, but it still leaves a real question mark over how soon he can return.
That uncertainty is what makes the four-week shutdown important. In this kind of injury, the usual recovery window can run from 4-12 weeks, so Nelson's plan sits near the front end of the range but does not guarantee a quick finish. Four weeks of rest and rehab is enough to clarify whether the elbow settles down, yet it is not enough to promise he will be back in time to help this season. He said as much himself when he called the outlook up in the air and said he would try to rehab, then reevaluate in a few weeks.
For the Diamondbacks, the immediate answer is simple: Nelson is out, and the next answer will depend on what the elbow shows after the shutdown. For Nelson, the cleaner injury report is a relief, but the calendar still works against him. If the reevaluation brings pain back into the picture, the season gets harder to save.
