The update came in the middle of a 6-5 loss that turned on a walk-off in the ninth, but the injury note was the part that carried into today because it left Rutschman’s next-game status open.
Albernaz said the club was playing it safe, and he made clear the decision was about caution as much as availability. “We’re giving him the off day and still evaluating him,” he said, adding that a catcher who already takes repeated foul tips is a player the team cannot afford to rush back after a head hit. That matters now because every lineup choice has more weight when the Orioles are seven games below.500, 12 1/2 out of first place and 3 1/2 out of the Wild Card.
The timing only sharpened the concern. Baltimore had rallied from a 3-0 deficit after the second inning, then surged ahead 5-3 in the seventh on back-to-back homers from Gunnar Henderson and Pete Alonso and a bases-loaded single by Jeremiah Jackson. But the Orioles still let three runs in during the bottom of the ninth, and Tyler O’Neill’s throwing error ended it. The club is now 30-0 when leading after the eighth inning, which made this one feel like a game they had already found a way to win before it slipped away.
Rutschman’s situation sits inside a larger problem that has been following the team for days. Before last night, the Orioles were 3-for-35 with runners in scoring position over their previous six games, and since June 6 they were 15-for-85, a.169 stretch that has helped keep them outside a playoff position in mid-June. That is why the head injury update matters beyond one night: if Rutschman is cleared after the off day, the Orioles get one of their most important bats and leaders back. If he is not, the team will have to keep sorting out how long caution turns into absence.
Albernaz also addressed the clubhouse questions that have surrounded the group, saying Samuel Basallo did not seem thrilled by the remarks but had moved on and was fine. For now, the more immediate answer is simpler and more urgent. Rutschman is being held out until the team is satisfied he is OK, and that means his status for the next game is still unresolved.
