Adolis García is set to have right latissimus dorsi repair surgery on Wednesday, and the move will end his 2026 season before it reaches the final stretch. He is already on the 60-day injured list and is expected to need six to eight months of recovery.
That timetable matters now because the Phillies still need answers in the outfield, and García was supposed to be part of the answer. The club signed him to a one-year, $10MM deal in December after releasing Nick Castellanos in February, but the plan never settled into place.
García was in obvious pain immediately after a strong throw in a game against the Blue Jays last week, then left after receiving attention from the training staff. The play summed up both sides of his brief Philadelphia run: the arm strength that once made him a difference-maker, and the injury that turned the right-field job into a problem instead of a solution.
Before the injury, García was hitting.195/.270/.329 with a 32.4% strikeout rate, numbers that help explain why the Phillies could not simply wait for him to return and call the spot fixed. He had been a force for the Rangers from 2021 to 2023 and helped Texas win the World Series in 2023, but his production over 2024 and 2025 had already slipped to.225/.278/.397 before Philadelphia took the gamble.
The Phillies have kept Brandon Marsh and Justin Crawford in two outfield spots, while using a platoon of Gabriel Rincones Jr. and Edmundo Sosa in another. Crawford is hitting.238/.293/.330 in his first 222 career plate appearances, Sosa is at.234/.269/.378 and Rincones has gone 1-for-14 with a.071/.071/.286 line, which shows how much of the outfield has been held together by compromise.
The larger issue is that the route Philadelphia chose in the winter never really got off the ground. García was brought in to replace Castellanos in right field, but poor performance and now surgery have left that switch unworkable, forcing the club back into patchwork just as the season enters its next stage.
García is expected to be ready for the start of the 2027 schedule, which gives the Phillies a clear medical endpoint but no immediate fix. With the trade deadline still ahead and outfield help still a need, the next move may come from outside the current roster, because the one they planned to use has already disappeared for the rest of the year.
