Beatriz Mesquita is headed back to the Octagon on June 20, and this time she arrives as a ranked fighter. Eight months after her UFC debut in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian jiu jitsu standout will make her third appearance inside the cage at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas against Melissa Mullins.
The timing matters because Mesquita did not have to wait long after her last victory to learn where she stood. On her birthday, she checked the UFC website after Marcos da Matta told her to look, and there was her name in the top 15. Mesquita said she was not sure it was real at first, then celebrated once she saw it with her own eyes.
That ranking followed the kind of debut that can change how a fighter is viewed. In her first Las Vegas trip, Mesquita stopped Montse Rendon with a first-round submission after landing a right hand that wobbled her opponent and setting up a rear-naked choke. Mesquita said the performance showed how much she is improving as a mixed martial artist, a useful marker for a fighter who entered the UFC with a reputation built far from the cage.
Her background makes the rise easier to understand and harder to dismiss. Mesquita is a 10-time IBJJF world champion, but the transition into mixed martial arts still has required time, repetition and a different kind of patience. She wanted to return in December or January after her debut win, but the layoff stretched to five months instead, a reminder that even elite grapplers do not control the calendar once they move into UFC traffic.
That is why the June 20 bout feels bigger than another booking. Mesquita wants to keep fighting at a fast pace because, as she put it, the more often she competes, the more experience she will have and the faster she can reach her goal of getting to the top and earning a title shot as quickly as possible. Mullins is the next test of whether that pace can hold, and Mesquita’s ranking gives the fight a sharper edge than her first two appearances ever carried.
If she wins again, the climb she checked on a website will look even more real. If she does not, the top-15 spot will become just another line in a short UFC career that is still being written at speed.
