Ronald Koeman changed his attack for Oranje against Sweden and put Brian Brobbey in the starting lineup, leaving Crysncio Summerville on the bench after the winger’s physical complaints in the days before the match. The decision also pushed Donyell Malen wider to the right.
That is the immediate reason Summerville is drawing attention now. Koeman said Oranje needed to bring more in attack, but also that the spaces would again be small against Sweden, making Brobbey a better target man than Malen in those conditions. The switch let Malen move more inside and gave Denzel Dumfries a higher role on the right side.
Summerville’s place on the bench was not a verdict on form. Koeman said Oranje were more than satisfied with him after his goal against Japan, yet he still kept him out of the starting XI because the player had been dealing with physical complaints and had stopped early in Thursday’s training session. Koeman said no unnecessary risks would be taken.
That caution mattered because the coach was trying to balance selection quality with fitness. Brobbey, 24, had only 13 international matches behind him before this one, with one goal and one assist, including a strike against Bosnië en Herzegovina in November 2024 and the assist against Duitsland in September 2024. Memphis Depay, meanwhile, had slipped to third in the striker order behind Malen and Brobbey, which shows how quickly the hierarchy in Oranje’s attack has shifted.
The one unsettled name in the group was Frenkie de Jong, who Koeman said was not completely free of issues but looked fit enough to start. Even there, the coach left the door open until the warm-up, saying he was taking into account that de Jong might not start and wanted his strongest side on the pitch. For Summerville, the unanswered point is simpler and more immediate: the coach did not say exactly what the physical complaints were, only that they were enough to keep him out of the first whistle.
