Daulton Varsho is back for the Toronto Blue Jays, reinstated from the injured list and active for Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs after missing time with left wrist inflammation. Lazaro Estrada was also brought back for the matchup, while Charles McAdoo and Brendon Little were optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.
For Varsho, the return matters now because it gives Toronto back one of its best defensive players in center field at the start of a series in which every roster decision is being watched closely. He had been out since June 10, then resumed hitting this week before being cleared to return, and he had produced a.738 OPS with five home runs in 64 games before the injury.
Estrada’s return gives the Blue Jays another arm after a brief stay in the majors. He went on the injured list in April with a shoulder impingement after one appearance, then threw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen against the Chicago White Sox and struck out three. The roster shuffle also reflects how Toronto has been trying to patch together innings while using Shane Bieber’s rotation spot as a bullpen day for much of the season.
That background makes Monday more important than it might look on paper. Bieber is set to make his season debut against the Houston Astros after throwing 80 pitches in a rehab start on Wednesday, a game in which he allowed five earned runs and 11 baserunners in five-plus innings. Toronto acquired him last summer, and his seven regular-season starts for the club finished with a 3.57 ERA and 1.017 WHIP in 40.1 innings, but the latest outing left a sharper question than the calendar did: how ready is he really for the next step?
The Blue Jays can absorb some short-term movement on the roster, but they cannot ignore the larger picture. They were 37-39 and 10 games back of the New York Yankees in the AL, and the return of Varsho helps stabilize a club that needed help both in the field and on the bench. What comes next is simple enough to state and hard enough to answer: whether Toronto gets immediate value from its reinforcements, or whether Bieber’s debut becomes the next test of how much this group has left to prove.
