Micky van de Ven has put contract talks with Tottenham Hotspur on hold while he plays for the Netherlands at the World Cup, a move that keeps his future open just as summer interest begins to sharpen. The pause does not mean a departure is imminent, but it gives Barcelona and Liverpool room to circle.
That matters because van de Ven is not being linked on name value alone. His pace is seen as his biggest asset, and he also brings physicality and aerial prowess that make him a different kind of centre-back. In a market where Barcelona have been searching for one for several months, that profile has obvious appeal.
Barcelona’s hunt has already taken them through one major dead end. A deal for Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan could not be completed, and the club moved on. Van de Ven has since emerged as a more realistic fit for Hansi Flick’s high line system, where his speed could cover ground quickly enough to play as the left centre-back.
Tottenham Hotspur, though, are hardly standing still. They have signed two high-level centre-backs, yet van de Ven is still being linked with a possible move away. That is the friction inside the story: a club strengthening the same area of the pitch where one of its most intriguing defenders is now being talked about as a target elsewhere.
Chris Waddle has already pushed the Liverpool argument further, saying Van Dijk is “getting on a bit” and that Liverpool should snap up van de Ven. Whether that leads to anything more concrete will depend on what happens after the World Cup, when the talks that are now on hold would have to resume — unless the summer starts with a bid instead.
