Alexandra Eala knocked out second-seeded Elena Rybakina on Thursday at the Berlin Tennis Open 2026, winning 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals and keep one of the tournament’s sharpest runs alive. The 21-year-old World No. 35 will now play Elina Svitolina on Friday for a place in the semifinals.
The result mattered because it was not just an upset, but one of the biggest wins of Eala’s WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz career by ranking. It also sends her into the quarterfinals of a WTA 500 tournament for only the second time, a sign that the Filipina is starting to turn isolated breakthrough results into something more durable.
Eala had to recover fast to get there. She was down 4-1 in the first set before winning six of the next seven games, then closed out the match in 1 hour and 32 minutes. Rybakina still made her work for every opening, landing 13 aces and winning 81 percent of her first serves, but Eala found a way to swing the match by taking 70.4 percent of her opponent’s second-serve points and converting three of her seven break-point chances.
That is what made the victory feel bigger than the scoreline. Eala said afterward that she called her dad and told him, “Oh my god!” She said they were “just screaming,” with her mother there too, and added that she was still shaking on match point. For all the straight-sets polish at the finish, she also admitted the match “could have gone either way.”
The context matters because this was Eala’s Berlin debut, and she arrived there already warmed up by a straight-sets win over Donna Vekic on Wednesday. Beating Rybakina on the second day of that run turned a promising week into a serious one, and the next test is immediate: Svitolina on Friday, with a semifinal berth on the line. If Eala can carry the same nerve through another tight match, her first trip to Berlin may end with the kind of result that changes how she is seen on the WTA Tour.
