Mariners score turned into a shutout Tuesday for Bryan Woo, who answered a rough start in Baltimore with seven-plus scoreless innings and helped send the Orioles away in a 3-0 loss. He struck out nine, allowed only three hits and one walk, and never let the game drift after the first inning gave Seattle all the runs it would need.
That mattered now because Woo was coming off a start last Thursday in Baltimore when the same Orioles tagged him for seven runs over five innings. This time, he said he wanted to get ahead in the count and get into the spots he wanted after feeling out of rhythm on the road, and he did exactly that by throwing first-pitch strikes to 16 of the 25 hitters he faced. By the time he was through seven innings, he had used 80 pitches and had the Orioles chasing from the start.
The Mariners did their damage immediately. Josh Naylor singled into right-center, Leody Taveras made an ill-fated barehanded play, Dominic Canzone drew a walk, and Cole Young followed with an opposite-field double down the left field line that brought home Naylor. Colt Emerson then punched a base hit through the right side to drive in two more runs and make it 3-0 before the inning was over.
Woo’s rebound was sharper because the Orioles were not helpless in the late innings. He allowed a Taveras single and walked Colton Cowser in the top of the eighth, putting two runners on with no outs, but Eduard Bazardo erased the threat with a ground-ball fielder’s choice, a flyout and then a 97-mph sinker that froze Taylor Ward. Andrés Muñoz took the ninth, walked Gunnar Henderson and then watched Taveras strike out with the tying run at the plate to finish it.
The win gave the Mariners the rubber game and the season series from the Orioles, a clean response after the previous week’s unraveling in Baltimore. Woo said the difference was simply getting ahead and landing in the places he wanted to be, and the numbers backed him up: better counts, fewer mistakes, and a game that never stopped belonging to Seattle. For the Orioles, it was another night in which the comeback never got off the ground.
