The Tigers called up Trei Cruz on June 19, putting the 27-year-old in position to make his major league debut the first time he gets into a game. The move came with Wenceel Pérez headed to the injured list after the team listed a left orbital fracture.
Cruz gives the Tigers a player who can move around almost anywhere they need him. He can handle all three outfield spots and the three infield spots to the left of first base, which matters for a club that already has Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Zach McKinstry, James Outman, Jahmai Jones and Matt Vierling in the outfield mix, along with Spencer Torkelson, Kevin McGonigle, Colt Keith, Hao-Yu Lee and McKinstry in the infield group. That versatility is part of why Detroit gave him a roster spot in November to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft.
The call-up also puts a rare family line in view. Cruz is the grandson of José Cruz and the son of José Cruz, and if he reaches the majors as expected, the Cruzes will become the fifth family with a grandfather, son and grandson all to play in the big leagues. The others are the Bells, the Boones, the Colemans and the Hairstons.
There is a reason the promotion is getting attention beyond the family name. Cruz split 2025 between Double-A and Triple-A and posted a.279/.411/.456 line with 13 home runs, 564 plate appearances and a 149 wRC+ that was 49% better than league average. He also stole 17 bases and entered 2026 ranked 18th by Baseball America and 32nd by FanGraphs in the system. But the path has not been smooth. He spent over a month on the minor league injured list this season, beginning about three weeks into April and lasting through most of May, and he has only a.225/.331/.326 line in 163 plate appearances this year.
Detroit did not make the move for nostalgia alone. Pérez’s injury opened the door, and Cruz’s ability to cover both the outfield and the left side of the infield gives the Tigers an immediate bench option while they wait to see how they want to use him. Whether his first appearance comes in the outfield or on the dirt is still the last unanswered detail, but the debut itself is no longer in doubt.
