For City, the timing matters because the fixture list has now fixed the frame around the transition. Bernardo Silva and John Stones are both due to leave when their contracts expire this summer, so Maresca will inherit a side that is changing on the touchline and in the dressing room at the same time. The summer transfer window is already open and runs until September 1 at 11pm BST, with the winter window following on January 1 and closing on February 1 at 11pm GMT.
