That calendar collision is why the idea has spread fast online, but the structure of the knockout round leaves no room for a U.S.-England meeting on that day.
The July 4 game in Philadelphia is not a group-stage showcase. It is a Round of 16 match between the winners of Match 74 and Match 77. Match 74 will be played at Boston Stadium on Monday, June 29, between the Group E winners and the third-place team from Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D or Group F. Match 77 follows on Tuesday, June 30, at New York New Jersey Stadium, where the Group I winner will meet the third-place team from Group C, Group D, Group F, Group G or Group H.
That is where the U.S. path gets narrow. The U.S. sits in Group D, and the only way it can reach the July 4 game is by finishing third in its group and then being placed into either Match 74 or Match 77. As of June 17, the USMNT was leading Group D after its win against Paraguay, which means it is not currently on the third-place track that would feed Philadelphia’s knockout game.
England is in Group L, and that alone shuts the door on the July 4 matchup fans have been hyping. England has no avenue into either Match 74 or Match 77, so there is no bracket path that would put England on the field in Philadelphia on July 4. The matchup can be imagined on social media, but it cannot be built by the tournament draw.
What Philadelphia will get instead is a knockout match shaped entirely by the results in Boston and New York New Jersey at the end of June. If the U.S. reaches the Round of 16 as a third-place team, it can still land in the July 4 slot. England cannot. That is the simple answer the bracket gives, even if the holiday setting keeps tempting fans to hope otherwise.
