Alex Eala turned her Berlin Open debut into a straight-sets win on Wednesday, beating Donna Vekic 7-5, 6-4 to reach the round of 16. The 21-year-old battled back from 0-40 down to close out the match and keep moving through the WTA 500 draw.
That result matters now because it sends Eala straight into a Thursday meeting with world No. 2 Elena Rybakina, the next test in a tournament that can turn quickly on one match. Eala earned her place in the field with a wildcard entry, and she made it count with eight aces, 25 winners and only 13 unforced errors against an opponent who had just come off a title run in London.
The numbers from the match tell part of the story, but not all of it. Vekic led 2-0 in the first set before Eala won the next four games, then Vekic pulled back ahead 5-4 before Eala took the 11th game and never gave up control again. The finish was tight enough to matter: down 0-40, Eala dug out the last points and served out a win that did not come from drift or luck. It came from making fewer mistakes and taking more chances when the pressure lifted the court a little higher.
There was also history behind the result. Eala had already beaten Vekic once before in the ASB Classic first round, and after the match she said every time they play it has been very difficult. She also said she kept telling herself that Vekic was fighting back, but that she is a fighter too and had to make life hard for her opponent. That is what turned the Berlin match from a decent start into something more meaningful for Eala: a second win over a difficult opponent, and one that arrived with a sharper edge than the scoreline first suggests.
Rybakina is a different problem. Eala lost to her 6-4, 6-3 in their Italian Open third-round match last month, which makes Thursday less of a continuation than a fresh assessment. For Eala, the immediate question is not whether Wednesday was enough. It is whether the same calm that got her past Vekic can hold up again against a higher-ranked player who has already beaten her once this season.
