The Yankees are running out of patience with Ryan McMahon at third base, and Amed Rosario is now being weighed as the internal fallback if the club decides it needs a change. With the 2026 MLB trade deadline just over six weeks away, the Yankees have a decision to make: keep waiting on McMahon or give Rosario a real run at the position.
That search is being driven by McMahon's line at the plate. Through 66 games and 177 at-bats, he is hitting.209/.271/.350 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs, along with a 30.6% strikeout rate that sits well above the 22.5% big-league average. Baseball Savant also pegs him at a.228 expected batting average, a 32.2% whiff rate and a 29.4% launch-angle sweet-spot rate, numbers that land in the 23rd, ninth and 15th percentiles, respectively.
Rosario has not forced the issue with a star turn, but his bat has been more useful. He is hitting.252 over 39 games and 107 at-bats, with a career-high.767 OPS, six home runs, 20 RBIs and seven walks. That production is modest in absolute terms, but it has outpaced McMahon's, which is enough to keep him in the conversation as the Yankees look for answers at third base.
That is where the friction sits. Rosario has been better, yet not so dominant that the job should automatically be his. If Aaron Boone wants an internal answer, he has to decide whether Rosario gets a legitimate shot to start at the hot corner moving forward, or whether Brian Cashman keeps looking outside the roster.
Trade names are already part of the discussion. Matt Chapman, Isaac Paredes and Eugenio Suárez have been mentioned as possible targets before the August deadline, and the Yankees could still choose that route if they decide the current mix is not enough. For now, McMahon remains the reason the search is happening at all, and Rosario is the clearest in-house test of whether New York can fix third base without paying for it in prospects.
