is turning the next GTA 5 upgrade into a free download on Thursday, giving owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions access to the PS5 and Xbox Series release at no extra cost. PC players are also getting a path from the older Legacy version to the newer Enhanced version.

The change matters because it lands just after Rockstar said the same upgrade would have cost $10. Now, the company is handing it out free to players who already bought in on the previous console generation, while also bringing PC users onto the Enhanced build with better visuals and hardware support.

That Enhanced version adds ray tracing, new content, SSD support, DualSense controller support and improved audio, along with Hao's Special Works and Career Progress rewards. For players who have stayed with since its original run, it is a meaningful update to a game that Rockstar first brought to the PS5 and Xbox Series in March 2022.

The timing also says something about where Rockstar is steering the series. Grand Theft Auto 5 has been out for nearly 13 years, has been live since October 2013 and a financial report showed it was still earning more than $1 million per day from September 2025 to April 2026. That long tail helps explain why the publisher is still investing in the game even as it moves toward .

What Rockstar has not answered is the part players care about most for the next game: whether GTA Online progress will carry over to Grand Theft Auto 6. The company has offered no confirmation, and it has also not released pricing or preorder information for the new title.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on Nov. 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, with no word yet on a PC version or a Switch 2 version. For now, the free upgrade is the concrete move in front of players, and Rockstar is making it arrive before the next game does.
