detectives are investigating an apparent shooting and vehicle crash in rural Washington County after 17-year-old was found dead Saturday evening. Deputies and local first responders were called to a crash alert around 7:30 p.m. in the 800 block of South Big Springs Road.

Rowley, of Pekin, Ind., was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies asked for state police help after arriving, and ISP detectives and crime scene investigators began collecting evidence at the rural Washington County location, about nine miles south of Salem.

What happened to Rowley is still unclear. Investigators have said they are working to determine what led to both the shooting and the crash, and police said the case is still in its early stages.

For now, authorities say there is no indication of an ongoing danger to the public. That leaves the central question untouched: whether the shooting came first, the crash followed, or both grew out of the same chain of events on South Big Springs Road.

The case remains active and ongoing as detectives continue to piece together what happened Saturday night.
