Georgia kept its season alive Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Texas in a College World Series elimination game at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska, and Tre Phelps delivered the hit that opened the door. His RBI double in the fifth inning broke a scoreless game and gave Georgia the first run it needed to move on.
The result sent Georgia into the CWS semifinals on Wednesday and ended Texas' tournament run after the Longhorns were shut out for just the second time this season. Georgia will need to beat Oklahoma twice to reach the best-of-three CWS championship series that starts Saturday.
For much of the night, Texas had the kind of pitching performance that usually keeps a team alive. Luke Harrison struck out 11 and had Georgia uncomfortable early, getting eight of his first 10 batters faced, but the Longhorns could not turn that into a lead. Georgia's lineup kept finding just enough pressure to matter, while Justin Byrd gave it room to breathe with five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
The difference came down to what Texas could not do once it had chances. It went 0-for-8 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, and even a brief push in the bottom of the eighth inning ended without a run. Ryan Black added Georgia's second score in the seventh inning, sealing a game that turned on one timely swing and a few missed ones on the other side.
That is why Wednesday matters so much for Georgia. One win puts the Bulldogs closer to the title series; a second one is the price of admission. Oklahoma is next, and the path from here is simple enough to measure and hard enough to finish.
