North Carolina took a 12-6 lead over West Virginia into the eighth inning in Omaha, putting the Tar Heels within reach of a spot in the College World Series championship series. The game turned late after West Virginia, which needed two wins to advance, rallied for five runs in the seventh but still trailed by six.
That is why the Unc Baseball Score was drawing attention. North Carolina entered the game 2-0 in the College World Series and was trying to finish its side of the bracket, while West Virginia was fighting to stay alive after already having been sent to the loser's bracket earlier in Omaha. The Tar Heels had beaten West Virginia on Day 3 before West Virginia turned around and defeated Troy to reach the national semifinals.
North Carolina built the cushion in part by forcing West Virginia to the pen with Reese Bassinger in the sixth inning. West Virginia was down 10-1 coming to bat in the bottom of that frame, then fell farther behind after Carter French tripled in Macon Winslow and Jake Schaffner drove him in to make it 12-1. The Tar Heels also changed pitchers after just six pitches from Cam Padgett, with Scott Forbes turning to Caden Glauber.
West Virginia still found a way to make the ending uneasy. A passed ball started the seventh-inning push, Gavin Kelly tripled off the wall, and Paul Schoenfeld drove him in. Armani Guzman then reached on what appeared to be a routine ground ball to short, and Gavin Gallaher had his fourth RBI of the day as the Mountaineers kept chipping at the margin. By the time the inning ended, North Carolina's lead had shrunk to 12-6.
The scoreboard at that point did not settle the larger question. North Carolina was still trying to complete a run that had already carried it to 2-0 in Omaha, while West Virginia still needed the kind of comeback that would force another game and keep its championship series bid alive. What was clear was that the Tar Heels had already survived one late surge, and the only thing the live update did not answer was whether they would finish the job.
